The Importance of Heart Health

While genetics can contribute to heart diseases, a healthy diet and lifestyle can help combat preventable heart conditions!

Here are a few tips to maintaining a healthy lifestyle according to the American Heart Association:

  • Burn at least as many calories as you take in.
  • Eat a variety of nutritious foods from all the food groups.
  • Live Tobacco free.

The recommended amount of physical activity is 150 minutes of moderate physical activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week.  Maintaining an active lifestyle can help you lose weight, maintain weigh, and improve you cardiovascular fitness. A simple tip to staying active during the say is to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Along with physical activity, nutrition is a key component in heart health. You may be eating enough food, but your body may not be getting the right nutrients. Your diet should include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, as well as nuts and legumes.  You should also strive to limit saturated fats, red meat, and foods that are high in sugar.
