Alzheimer's Family Care Giver Training

The Alzheimer's Association of Central New York will hold a Family Care Giver Training program at the Masonic Care Community Richard P. Thomas Health Pavilion in September. The 90-minute sessions over three weeks will cover a variety of issues of concern to individuals who are caring for someone with Alzheimers. Topics include:

Sept 8 General Discussion of the disease and dementia. 2-4PM in the Meditation Room of the Health Pavilion

Sept 15 Managing the communication and behavior challenges of Alzheimer's 2-4 PM in the Meditation Room of the Health Pavilion

Sept 22 Considering how care giving affects you and your health

These programs are free and open to the public

Geriatric Scholar Program

2010 Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program

September 16, 23, 30, and October 7, 14, at The Masonic Care Community located at 2150 Bleecker Street
Utica, N.Y.

This five week program provides cutting edge training in geriatrics and gerontology to health care providers including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, nursing home and other administrators, clergy and healthcare/human services workers. Continuing education credits/hours are available

Topics Include-

September 16th–
Overview of Aging and Quality of Life, Psychological Development Across the Lifespan, Physical Changes of Aging, End-of-Life and Palliative Care.

September 23rd –
Overview of Medicare, Medicaid and Health Care Reform, Bioethics, Rural Aging.

September 30th –
Culture and Aging, Geriatric Rehabilitation, Promoting Wellness and Stress reduction, Communication and Sensory Loss.

October 7th -
7th Annual Geriatric Mental Health Teaching Day - Diagnosis and Treatment of Depression, Dementia, and Delirium, Bereavement and Complicated Grief, Update on Psychotropic Medication, Alcohol and Prescription Drug Use.

October 14th –
Managing Transitions, Culture Change in Long Term Care, Managing Delirium.

*CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS have been approved and are available for
dieticians, nurses, nursing home administrators, physicians and social workers

REGISTRATION
The cost for the 5-day certificate program (which includes the Geriatric Mental Health Day) is $300 per person. The cost to attend only the Geriatric Teaching Day on Oct 7th is $125. Group discounts are available. Scholarships may be available depending on external funding.

National Kidney Foundation Walk

The National Kidney Foundation will hold its annual fundraising walk on the campus of the Masonic Care Community on Sunday September 19th.

Registration for the walk will begin in the campus fitness center at 10AM. The walk steps off at 11am For more information contact the local Kidney Foundation.

Please do not bring any pets to this event.

Annual Alzheimer's Awareness Walk

The Alzheimer's Association will hold its annual fundraising walk on the campus of the Masonic Care Community on Saturday September 25th.

The walk will begin in the campus fitness center. Registration begins at 8:30AM with the walk starting at 9:30AM. For more information contact the local Alzheimer's Association.
