Volunteering Can be Good for you

Jul. 16th, 2008

Many people give freely of their time and talent. It makes you feel good to help a community organization. But recent studies show there are other benefits in being a volunteer..Better Health. At the Masonic Care Community there are about 100 volunteers that perform a variety of tasks including running the gift shop, helping residents with their mail, and participating in major campus events to name a few. Rob Lauducci, the Director of Volunteer Services says people who volunteer their time feel a sence of accomplishment and involvment. They look forward to their visits with residents and feel they are making a difference in people's lives. Research has found that volunteering is especially beneficial to older adults through improved physical and mental health and greater life satisfaction.
A number of residents of the Masonic Care Community are also active volunteers and in 2007 gave thousands of hours in service. Resident Glenn Wood, who single handedly performed more than 500 hours of volunteer service says he never keeps track of his hours, he just likes to help out.
